This study abroad offers students the opportunity to explore how Panama addresses global challenges through innovative local solutions. Rooted in the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the program emphasizes immersive learning, cultural exchange, and on-site exploration. Students will spend time in Panama City and surrounding areas engaging with topics such as food security, trade, politics, indigenous rights, and global public health, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS education.
This experience includes visits to humanitarian and non-governmental organizations coordinated by the City of Knowledge, an international hub for development, research, and innovation. Students will meet with representatives from the World Food Programme and other NGOs working in Panama. A highlight of the program is a visit to the Emberá Indigenous community, where students will gain firsthand insight into indigenous advocacy, cultural preservation, and the impacts of globalization.
Additional components include tours of key historical and cultural landmarks such as the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo. Pre-departure seminars will provide students with a foundation in Panamanian history, politics, and sustainable development efforts, preparing them for a meaningful and reflective experience abroad.
This study abroad is ideal for students interested in global affairs, development, public policy, health, environmental sustainability, or Latin American studies. No prior experience in Spanish or data science is required—just a willingness to engage, learn, and immerse yourself in a dynamic global setting.
