Honors College assistant director of communications publishes book about equity in dance

Congratulations to the Honors College’s assistant director of communications, Dr. Kate Spanos, on the publication of her new book, “Dancing in the World: Revealing Cultural Confluences.” Written with co-author Sinclair Ogaga Emoghene, the book explores equity and inclusion in the dance field through their experiences with dance and carrying culture through the body. The book has been praised as a “significant and valuable contribution to minority dance cultures,” and for providing “a new approach to aesthetics” and a new “lens for digital autoethnography of dancing in the twenty-first century.”

Dr. Spanos acknowledges the support of the Honors Humanities program, which has offered her the opportunity to teach a section of their sophomore seminar, also called “Dancing in the World,” on related themes as a faculty fellow for the past six years. Honors Humanities students have played a large role in providing feedback as Dr. Spanos has shaped her teaching philosophy and creative process with regard to dance and culture.

The book will be released by Routledge Press on Thursday, August 16, and will be accompanied by a podcast, which premieres on Thursday, June 15. Look for an announcement of an Honors College book launch party for Dr. Spanos coming soon!
