Honors students among UMD Bioscience Day poster winners

Congratulations to Pavan Bhat (ILS, Banneker/Key), Skylar Chan (DCC), Nora Fadul (GEMS), Adam Levav (DCC), Matthew Nikzad (ILS) and Sragvi Pattanaik (ILS) on their awards at UMD’s Bioscence Day poster competition! Bioscience Day is an annual event on the College Park campus that features research talks, an inventor pitch competition, poster session, networking panels, a keynote lecture and more. This year’s theme was “Viral Insights from Covid-19.”

  • Pavan Bhat (ILS, Banneker/Key) – “Generation of an Antigen-Antibody Structure Dataset with a Machine Learning Framework for B-cell Epitope Prediction,” 3rd place in Bioengineering
  • Skylar Chan (DCC) – “Finding aberrant gene expression and splice junctions from RNA sequencing data in undiagnosed patients,” 2nd place in Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and Proteomics
  • Nora Fadul (GEMS) – “Brain-Computer Interface Prosthetics,” 2nd place in Bioengineering
  • Adam Levav (DCC) – “Detection of Genomic Variation via Orphaned Read Coverage of Aligned Mate Pairs,” 3rd place in Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and Proteomics
  • Matthew Nikzad (ILS) – “Octanoic Acid in Drosophila sechelia host fruit protects the fly from fungal infection,” 1st place in Biodiversity, Conservation, Ecology & Evolution
  • Sragvi Pattanaik (ILS) – “Effects of Nrxn Mutation and Postnatal PolyI:C Treatment on Juvenile Rat Social Behavior,” 1st place in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science
