Winter study abroad trip to Berlin with DCC

Beginning in January 2026, the Design Cultures & Creativity (DCC) living-learning program is excited to extend its curriculum far beyond the University of Maryland campus—to Berlin, Germany!

HDCC378 Design and Creativity Abroad is a 3-credit course that blends discussion and experiential learning to ask: What happens when we approach the world—its systems, spaces, places, and communities—through the lens of design? And, what issues or concerns are central to creating a better world? This course challenges students to prod the intersections of arts, technology, and history to better understand the power of human creativity in shaping lived experience and posing sociopolitical intervention. Students will travel to the vibrant city of Berlin, known for its warm embrace of artistic freedom, where they will investigate the role of design in a variety of contexts—from fine arts to public infrastructure, collective memory to energy technology—and ultimately be inspired to make a contribution of their own.
