Honors College Living-Learning Programs (LLPs)

Fast Facts

  • The Honors College is open to all majors.
  • Most Honors students are invited to join the Honors College as new freshmen. The Honors College enrolls a little over a 1,000 new students each year.
  • Current UMD and transfer students may apply to join the Honors College upon completing one academic year (two full-time semesters) and achieving a 3.5 minimum GPA. Advanced students may apply to join the ACES minor and/or departmental honors programs.
  • Students must have 3.0 GPA to remain in good standing and a 3.20 GPA to earn the Honors Citation and/or maintain the Banneker/Key scholarship.

Advising an Honors Student

  • High-ability students are typically ready early in their academic careers to embark on research and study abroad and to engage in special opportunities, such as those offered through the Global and Federal Fellows Program. They should be encouraged to do so.
  • Honors College students usually need a little less of the “how-to” mechanics of advising and more of the, “Where do you see your future self?” type of conversations with their advisors. (Many of our students will have researched required courses, etc. prior to their appointments.)
  • Advanced Honors College students are encouraged to undertake departmental honors to make their experience at the University of Maryland a four-year Honors experience.
  • The majority of winners of the prestigious national and international scholarships are Honors College students. Advising meetings can be opportunities to identify potential candidates early in their careers.
  • Although Honors students come to college ready academically, they are emotionally like all other first-year students, with some of the same non-academic transition challenges.
  • Honors students may have to re-learn how to study as what may have worked in high school is no longer sufficient at the college level.

Additional Information

  • Each semester, Honors hosts a Citation Ceremony for students who completed their LLP requirements with a 3.2. GPA the prior semester. This citation is noted on their transcript.
  • Honors College students may apply to transfer to another Honors College LLP (i.e., from DCC to HGLO) after one full year. If approved, they agree to begin with the first-year cohort curriculum. Previous HC LLP coursework does not transfer to the new program.
  • While most do, not all students reside on campus or in our specific program buildings.
  • Students should complete the Honors College FERPA form each academic year: https://www.honors.umd.edu/current-academicpolicies.html
  • Students wanting to withdraw from their Honors LLP/HC or take a leave of absence for medical reasons can get more information at: https://www.honors.umd.edu/current-academicpolicies.html
