This Scholarship-in-Practice course offers students an introduction to core helping skills used in peer counseling settings and predominant theoretical approaches used in the counseling field. Students will have the opportunity to practice helping skills during class and to participate in two longer-form mock helping sessions with a classmate. The course also explores mental health stigma and different avenues for engaging in mental health advocacy work. Throughout, students will critically reflect on the role of positionality, privilege, culture, and individual and societal biases within the counseling space.
The course will be taught at the following times in the Spring 2026 semester:
