Starting this semester, the program formerly known as Honors Global Communities will change its name to Honors Global Challenges and Solutions (HGLO). Since joining the Honors College in 2022, HGLO has focused on data science and global issues. The program’s mission remains focused on offering students a unique framework for understanding contemporary global affairs and issues. Through the lenses of social science and data science, HGLO empowers students to understand, analyze, and address major global challenges.
“The new name better captures what this program is really about,” says faculty program director Sarah Croco. “Our students work toward solutions to global challenges by reading, expanding their data science toolkits, participating in fabulous internships, learning about the world through study abroad, and doing independent research.”
HGLO integrates multiple social science fields and analytical methods, fostering an ethos of global accountability, interrelation, and social justice. The program fosters an inclusive and interculturally-conscious community, which is reflected in course content and co-curricular programming, that has connections across campus, throughout the Maryland/DC region, and nationally and internationally.
“Our students and faculty in HGLO are doing important work, using cutting-edge tools, to understand and provide solutions for global challenges,” says Honors College executive director Kristy Maddux. “Taking on this new name—Honors Global Challenges and Solutions—reflects this valuable work.”
