DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first event in the “Folding Identity: AAPI Zines in Conversation and Practice” series! “Folding Identity” aims to put AAPI DMV zinesters\, faculty\, and the UMD community in conversation and collaboration. Art-making and print culture are inseparable from the Asian American identity. What can zines do to keep the community alive?\n\nJoin them for a conversation\, some food\, and a zine workshop with DMV(-ish) zine artists Margaret Huey (@durianpunk) and Anthony Le (@vagabondzine)\, along with Dr. Rossina Zamora Liu as our faculty conversationalist\, on Tuesday\, September 29th. The first 45 minutes will be a discussion\, then a break for some food\, and finally\, participants will spend an hour making zines together\, led by the artists.

DESCRIPTION:Five-time Grammy Award winner and humanitarian Angélique Kidjo sits down with College of Arts and Humanities Dean Stephanie Shonekan for a poignant conversation about music\, cultural fluency\, and global advocacy. Named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and “Africa’s premier diva\,” Kidjo hails from Benin and blends musical traditions from West Africa and around the globe while incorporating multiple languages\, including her own personal musical language.  \nDuring this special evening\, Dean Shonekan and Kidjo will explore the artist’s music and how the singer has used her fame as a platform for humanitarian work as an ambassador for both Oxfam and UNICEF and a founder of the Batonga Foundation\, which is dedicated to advancing girls’ education across Africa.  \nThis event will feature performances by UMD students. \nFree—get your tickets today! go.umd.edu/kidjo
