SUMMARY:America 250: A History of the Greater United States
DESCRIPTION:As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, How to Hide an Empire invites readers to look beyond the familiar map of the nation and consider the overseas territories\, global ambitions\, and often-overlooked communities that have shaped American life\, politics\, culture\, and citizenship. \nOn Wednesday\, September 16\, author Daniel Immerwahr will join Professor Croco for an engaging conversation about the book’s central questions: What does it mean to understand the United States as a global power? Whose stories are left out when we define the nation only by its most familiar borders? And how might a fuller view of U.S. history change how we understand the present? \nProfessor Croco\, a faculty member in Government and Politics and director of Honors Global Challenges & Solutions\, will guide the discussion and audience Q&A. The event is an opportunity for Honors students and the wider campus community to engage directly with one of the year’s central intellectual conversations\, and to celebrate Professor Croco’s leadership in bringing timely global questions into the classroom and beyond. \nEvent details\n\n\nDate and time: Wednesday\, September 16 at 12 p.m. \n\n\nLocation: Prince George’s Room\, Stamp Student Union \n\n\nAbout the First Year Book\nEach year\, the University of Maryland’s First Year Book program selects a shared text to spark thoughtful conversation across the campus. The program brings students\, faculty\, and staff together through classroom discussions\, author visits\, campus events\, and community dialogue. \nThis year’s selection\, How to Hide an Empire\, supports the program’s aim of helping the UMD community think critically\, debate respectfully\, and explore the large\, interconnected challenges that shape our world. The September 16 Q&A is co-sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies\, Honors Global Challenges & Solutions\, and the School of Public Policy.

SUMMARY:New Media Landscape presentations by journalism faculty
DESCRIPTION:Merrill faculty will speak about the evolving media landscape and what those changes mean for communicators. \nThe journalism landscape is going through a period of seismic change as trust in the press is eroding\, many local outlets are shifting and shrinking\, audiences are growing more fragmented\, and AI is impacting the way news is reported and consumed. Legacy media are competing with content creators\, social media feeds\, and more. \nTwo members of our Merrill faculty\, Jerry Zremski and Tom Rosenstiel\, will unpack these changes and explain what they mean for communicators and the next generation of journalists. Zremski and Rosenstiel led the publication of the Maryland Local News Ecosystem Study in 2024\, which takes an in-depth look at how local news is evolving across the state. \nRosenstiel\, former executive director of the American Press Institute\, is a veteran journalist\, researcher\, novelist\, and author of 12 books\, including The Next Journalism\, released August 17. He lectures around the world and consults with media companies on the future of news and information. \nZremski serves as director of Merrill’s Local News Network. He formerly served as Washington bureau chief for The Buffalo News. He serves as the Klingenstein Family Endowed Chair in Journalism. \nEvent details: \n\nDate & Time: Thursday\, Sept. 24\, 2:30-4:00 p.m.\nLocation: Turner Hall Auditorium\nRSVP: By Tuesday\, Sept. 22 to raloisi@umd.edu
