UNIVERSITY HONORS CITATION REQUIREMENTS

The University Honors Citation is an academic distinction and formal acknowledgement that you participated in Maryland's Honors program.

The Honors Citation appears on your transcript, and students who earn the Citation wear elegant red and gold Honors cords at commencement.

The University Honors Program Citation requires a 3.2 cumulative GPA and completion of a minimum of 16 Honors credits, distributed as follows:

  • 15 Honors credits (five 3-credit Honors courses - HONR seminars or Honors versions of regular departmental courses) of which at least 9 credits must be Honors seminars
  • one 1 credit Honors colloquium (usually HONR 100)

Most students complete their Honors Citation requirements within 5 semesters, but the Citation may be completed anytime before graduation. Regardless of when students complete their Citation, they remain part of University Honors the entire time they are an undergraduate at Maryland. Students apply for the Citation during the semester in which they finish the requirements.

Although applications are always available at the Honors office in Anne Arundel Hall, we prefer that students respond to the announcement posted on the Honors listserv each semester. (Because we wait until grades for the current semester are posted before reviewing applications, we prefer to have applications come in toward the end of the semester.)

Students in Gemstone or Honors Humanities will complete the University Honors Citation during the course of their programs.

An Honors Citation Ceremony is held annually to award students who earned their Citations at the end of the previous semester. Parents and guests are invited to attend this celebration.
